AUTOMATIC
DLAMINI - From A Diva To A Diver
A fascinating record of John Parish and Polly Harvey before their respective
solo careers took off. This hard-to-obtain album also features Jeremy
Hogg (PJ Harvey's band), Andy Henderson (Echobelly) and a host of others.
Unlike some recordings from the deep past of well-known entertainers,
this album really stands up in today's musical climate.
GARY REVILO AND NIÑO RICARDO - Mad Monk
EP
This item features John Parish and Richard Williams "interpreting"
four of Oliver Gray's songs. Although hardly groundbreaking, it's fun
and has in recent years been praised as pre-dating the sound of Green
Day by several years!
THE AGENCY - Potato Junction
The world's greatest party band presents a selection of stage favourites.
For full details about The Agency, please visit their
website.
INNERSENSE
- Our First Demo
The world's least girly Girl Band! Now called simply The
Sense and featuring Annabel Gray, Sara Fawcitt and Hannah Gilbert,
the band here interpret four of their own songs live and unplugged.
THE
CAGE - Singles Night At The Shooting Gallery
The Cage split in 1999. Richard is now the publicity manager of The Tower
Arts Centre and Steve has moved to Devon. The album remains a genuine
gem and is now perceived to have been well ahead of its time.
Singles Night at the Shooting Gallery was reviewed in Q Magazine...
Apparently, Steve Bennett saw in 1998 with three massive heart attacks.
Excuse him, then, for the Cage's bruised, world-weary outlook. They're
a partnership between the 46-year old vocalist and his 31-year old cohort,
Richard Williams. Bennett's voice - an English version of Mike Scott,
with plenty of welly - sounds tailor-made for drama. They throw rock shapes:
Snow White Queen pummels along like fellow West Countrian Polly Harvey;
Let's Go For The High is clammy Bristol Delta Blues and American Dream
a pocket U2 - but overall they lean towards drum-free, naked balladry.
Love Story - about a relationship bust-up - weaves an urgent web of electric
and acoustic guitars, the hymnal The Legacy of Dust underpins Bennett
with weepy strings, while Subjects of Revenge (subject: perceived junkie
glamour) is voice, mandolin and traffic hubbub. As a final touch, it's
dedicated to "1.5 million units of Strepokinase, without which this
recording would definitely not have been possible". * * *
